Preliminary Transcript General Education Evaluation Request
This evaluation service is for students who have completed college coursework at a U.S regionally accredited college/university or have completed AP, IB or CLEP exams. The evaluation will determine if the courses satisfy general education (GE) requirements for transfer to UC or CSU campuses, or for an SMC degree .
Because of the popularity of this service, we will prioritize serving currently enrolled SMC students and/or students who have met with an academic counselor at SMC.
Some cases may require that students contact a counselor in order to be better served. Examples of when an online evaluation request will not be processed include the following:
- Completion of 50 units or more at a college or university, including having earned a bachelor's or professional degree.
- Completion of 65 units or more from California Community Colleges.
- Request for course substitution or equivalency for SMC major and/or certificate of achievement.
- Request does not have all unofficial transcripts attached. Courses must be on the transcript of the college where they were taken.
- Request for prerequisite course waivers for math, English, or science courses.
- Request for foreign coursework evaluation.
- A transcript evaluation was already completed for you.

- Student must be currently enrolled, or plan to enroll in SMC courses next term, and have an SMC student ID number.
- Unofficial transcripts and unofficial exam score reports must be legible and include student's name and the name of the U.S. regionally accredited college/university. Some cases may require that transcripts include the transcript legend, which states the calendar system, course numbering and accreditation.
- You must submit the unofficial transcripts for all the colleges/universities you've attended. Courses must be on the transcript of the college where completed.
- Some courses may require additional documentation, including a syllabus, for a final decision.
General Education (GE) Patterns
Transcripts and test score reports are reviewed only for IGETC, CSU GE or SMC GE. We cannot evaluate for private or out-of-state colleges/universities. Students should contact those institutions directly.
Before submitting a preliminary GE evaluation request, it's important that you meet with a counselor first to see which general education pattern is best for you as you can only request one evaluation through this process.
- IGETC: For transfer to either UC or CSU campuses, or are undecided.
- CSUGE (for students who began CCC or CSU before Fall 2021) or CSUGE (for students who began CCC or CSU Fall 2021 or after): For transfer to CSU campuses and Associate Degrees for Transfer.
- IxD CSUGE: For SMC's bachelor degree only.
- SMC Associate Degree: For local SMC Associate degrees only. This does not include Associate Degrees for Transfer.
Evaluation Limitations
- Admissions will do a final, official evaluation once you petition to graduate and will check that your records match.
- It is critical that official transcripts/exam scores are sent directly from your former institution(s) and/or testing service (e.g., College Board) to SMC's Admissions & Records Officeby the published graduation deadlines in order to be eligible to receive the degree or certificate.
- Unofficial transcripts/test scores submitted for the evaluation will not be retained by the counseling department. Please be prepared to share a copy of your transcript/test score report when you meet with a counselor
